Anyone who has been looking for accessible housing in London, or indeed anywhere in the UK will know the difficulties there are finding suitable housing. However, since we started in the accessible housing world in 2015, things have been improving, albeit slowly….
We still have a massive shortage of accessible housing to rent, but we have seen an improvement with the new build developments and here we take a look back at the steps that have got us to where we are now. Although developers should have been building accessible housing in London due to building regulations set out in 2010, many have not, and a majority still do not.
In London, 90% of all new-build properties should be to M4(2) accessible and adaptable standards, and 10% should be to M4(3) wheelchair user standards. Accessibility standards in London are higher than the rest of England. This means disabled people have better chances of finding suitable accommodation (supposedly!) Although, overall, London boroughs are not meeting the targets set out in the London Plan.
So we are so pleased to be working with one well known developer, BARRATT LONDON who has taken their responsibility very seriously. Not only are they creating well sized and designed wheelchair accessible and adaptable apartments, but they have also taken consultation from disability organisation AccessAble for all aspects of design and usability.
In addition to taking their responsibilities seriously as above, . We know only too well how disheartening and frustrating it is for clients to go to visit new builds who are intending on building their accessible and adaptable homes, but those in wheelchairs or with limited walking, can’t visit the showrooms, as they are not accessible.
We are delighted to promote details of a range of fantastic Wheelchair Adaptable Homes Designed for Accessible Living for Sale. On behalf of BARRATT LONDON, we are uniquely promoting Bermondsey Heights a selection of two and three bed apartments available designed with accessibility needs in mind.
